About us

The Federal Polytechnic Bida runs affiliation programmes with various universities so as to award degree certificates in the institution. The university affiliation programme was created by the management of the polytechnic to run degree programmes in affiliation with reputable universities in an effort to strengthen its academic programmes.

It was created during the 2017/2018 academic session in line with Dr. Abubakar A. Dzukogi’s agenda of expanding the richness of the academic programmes of the polytechnic. It was further actualized by Dr Babadoko Aliyu of the Directorate of Collaborations, Affiliations and Linkages (DCAL), FUTMinna who proposed the collaboration between the two institutions. Since creation, the affiliation programme has faced several challenges and has also made a lot of progress serving its purpose and continues to receive support and cooperation from various universities.

The programme is similar to several others in various institutions in Nigeria such as Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Kaduna Polytechnic (KadPoly), Nasarawa Polytechnic and Yobe state polytechnic who are also running degree programmes through affiliation with Federal University of Technology, Minna.

The affiliation programme aims to initiate several collaborations and to tap from the wealth of experience of reputable universities to attract grants and other mutual benefits. Through its efforts, the federal polytechnic will be able to run more Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) and Bachelor of Technology programmes for undergraduates and diploma holders who want to have degree certificates. The staffs of both the polytechnic and university work together to improve the human resource base of the affiliation programme.

The Federal Polytechnic Bida is exploring ways of collaborating with the Federal University of Technology, Minna to add more degree programmes through affiliation with the university. This involves the collective effort of the Polytechnic and the Directorate of Collaborations, Affiliations and Linkages (DCAL), FUTMinna. Currently, available programmes from the university include Electrical Engineering, Building Technology and Quantity Surveying, all accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National University Commission (NUC).

Creation and upgrades, as well as plans, are continually underway to expand and add more programmes to the affiliation and boost the polytechnic’s qualification in areas of human and library resources, physical environment and lecture facilities. These will also meet the required standards and approval of the National University Commission (NUC). Once the necessary facilities are in place and accreditation received from the NUC, a degree programme will take off and will also be announced on this website.

Whereas sciences, engineering and environmental degree programmes (such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Urban and Regional planning, Building Technology and Quantity Surveing) may be affiliated to the Federal University of Technology Minna, the humanities and management programmes (e.g. Accouuntancy, Business Administration and Management, Public Administration and Mass Communication) will be affiliated to business schools in the locality such as IBB University and Kwara state university.

On fears in some quarters that the running of degree programmes by the polytechnic would drastically affect the core mandate of running National and Higher National Diploma programmes, the affiliation programme takes measures against negative effects on this core mandate. The entry requirements for the universities continue to differ from that of the polytechnic and more so the polytechnic would be running the programme for polytechnic graduates who wish to earn degree certificates.
